I began building Alberon in 2013 as I began to use Dungeons and Dragons as a way to help the teenagers and kids I worked with to pass the abundant time they had while they received inpatient psychiatric services. Slowly, I began to see that the game had loads of unintended positive qualities that led to me running games nearly daily.
I saw that this game could be used to give people who had never had an opportunity to express themselves try on new identities in a safe, controlled environment; it was a place to practice new social strategies to see how they feel without alienating friends; and it was a way to practice distress tolerance when things didn't go their way. More than anything, there was unexpected power when people realized that with the dragons and dice stripped away, the only thing that made them heroic was their choices... choices like the ones that we make every day. If you can be heroic through your choices, you can be heroic in real life, too.
Alberon was a place I built to house the emotions of that work: tragedy and triumph; the emotions of stories of the darkest deeds that people can commit, and the elation of witnessing journeys that real-life heroes took to overcome them; when my shift was over, and the ideas wouldn't stop, Alberon was created.
In 2018 I decided to run a campaign for my adult friends, and used the sandbox of Alberon (Dominion in particular) as a setting. My intentions aren't to make money with this, as I never want a pay wall to stand between something I've seen that can help somebody and an individual who might benefit from it, but since the intense prep work was going into it, we decided to stream the game anyways.
Adventures in Alberon takes place in 1470 of the Third Age, known as the Age of Civility to most. Prior to that there was 3,000 years to the Age of Dragons, where the mighty dragon Fazzarak and his Skald held sway over much of Alberon. Before dragons, before the primordial landmass of Auldwynn split into the Auld and Dominion, before even magic itself, was two thousand years that comprised the Age of Giants. Alberon is a world with a richly documented history.
Unlikely heroes join together to stop the Goddess of Rot, Azrah, from breaking free of her interplanar prison to bring death and destruction on the continent! Set in 1470 T.A.
Set ten years after the conclusion of the Dominion campaign, Campaign Two will be set in the Fey-infused continent of Everest!
